My dad is a big Herb Alpert fan. He's got just about all the records and cd's that have been released. I'd love to find something special for him for christmas though. Some of his music was never released in the USA, finding something like that would be great. Any suggestions?
Been working on the wife's pc to get it boot faster. How do I find out the process that's taking forever to boot on the pc?

Specifically, the os takes about 1-2 minutes AFTER the chkntfs program runs to boot....it just give a blank screen and doesn't access the HD (no light indicator)...

Where do I find information to help?

Googling has been fairly futile.

BTW- ran across something called bootvis...trying it out now.

Pic of the little guy (not a great pic, but you get the idea):
He's been quacking up a storm today; not sure why, since breeding season is typically springtime (stimulated by rains, obviously we're now in snowtime weather). AFAIK, only males call, so gender can be determined by who's making noise and who isn't.

Nano problems |

Ok. While on vacation in Chicago my wife (against her better judgement) let me get a nano. It ran fine the first time I used it but then it started freezing up. The screen will keep moving as normal but the control stop responding and I eventually have to hold the Play/Pause button for a few minutes straight to get it to shut off.

What do i do? Is there a software fix? Maybe I haven't installed the latest stuff for it? Should I call Apple support (it has been about 2 months)?
Who are the "Mac Marines" and how can we get them to shut up? |

From an article I read this morning, a positive look at Apple's success.
The five rules of cool
By Harris Collingwood

Almost since its founding in 1976, Apple Computer has enjoyed a prominence out of all proportion to its rather modest share of the personal computer market. That prominence can be measured by the attention lavished on the company's every move as well as every attempt to analyse its strategy and tactics.

Consider the uproar from Macintosh purists when Apple launched its brief attempt to license its operating system to other hardware companies. When Apple reversed course and opted to keep its operating system to itself, another camp bellowed just as loudly.

Whenever a journalist suggests that Apple might be something less than the most perfect organisation in recorded history, the poor sap is deluged with emails and phone calls from self-appointed "Mac Marines."

------

note: the "Mac Marines" line made me laugh, but really, who are these people? Why do these self-appointed militants feel compelled to display blind loyalty, and get infantile about it? These are the nuts who amplify Apple's "Cult" image, which hurts more than helps. This must drive columnists crazy, always having to qualify analysis or criticism by adding "mac fantatics, please don't bomb my inbox".

What's the deal with these guys? Would any of you admit to having done this? Written an angry note to an editor after an article about Apple you didn't like? Know anyone who has? Any way we can get these people to SHUT UP? Interested in your thoughts on this. I'm sure you've seen columnists make a note about this, begging mac heads not to bomb them. Why do this? How does it help anything? I wish we could stick a sock in their mouth, or take away their mac priveleges for a month. You know what I mean?
Which HD is faster for P'book? |

Which is faster? 100 gb, 7200 rpm, 8 mb cache, OR 100 gb, 5400 rpm, 16 mb cache. This will replace a 4200 rpm stock drive in a 12" PowerBook.

I'm happy to see this new, yet familiar place!

Software Update update... no "Quit" button |

I have Software Update set to check every day and pop up with whatever it finds. I usually glance at it quick and click the "Quit" button.

Today, there was no "Quit" button to click.

This is pretty far from being an important issue, but it seems odd they would make that change.
