PSA - live in California? Do you have your Carbon Monoxide Alarm yet? - SDGuy - 06-22-2011

Just saw this tidbit in the news:
"Homeowners in California have less than two weeks to get a carbon monoxide detector installed in their homes.
A new state law that goes into effect July 1 requires the devices to be installed in all single-family homes that have an attached garage, fireplace or a fosil (sic)-burning heater."

List of approved devices & FAQ sheet here.

Actual legislation wording here.

We have all 3 and don't have the CO meter yet. Prolly should though just to be safe.

I've had a CO meter for years. I bought it because we had an old furnace and gas fireplace that were both non-direct-vent (i.e. like most of the furnaces and gas fireplaces in the US) and therefore susceptible to back drafting. I didn't like the idea of not waking up one day. Just in the last two years there have been at least two publicized deaths in our city alone due to CO poisoning due to leaking or backdrafting old gas heating systems. This is not a rare occurrence.

I too have had one for years! As a wood stove burner, I enjoy waking up in the morning!!! Having said that it has never kicked in and that's a good thing.

I've never heard of this law until now. It's odd that these devices are required to be installed in single family homes first. It seems like the smart way to go about this is to require it in rentals first, and then homes when they are sold. Enforcing this kind of law in rentals would be easy. How is this going to be enforced in single family homes if most people don't even know these devices are required?

they should be replaced every 5 years. The detector sensor has a limited life. Mine came with a lithium battery, and in about 5 years when the battery dies, toss the detector and buy a new one. DON'T replace the battery. My old one, from the same manufacturer, had the battery go out about a year ago. I replaced the battery and within a few months, it was giving off a lot of false positives, even with the windows open in the middle of the summer. The local gas company told me that it is a common thing. This was also verified by a buddy who works for the gas company running 2 of their power plants, but interned with the natural gas delivery dept for 6 months.

Not a requirement for us as renters ... yet. Still, we have had two in our 2 bedroom duplex. Time to replace both actually. Any particular recommendation?
