SX40 Users- How well does it replace a dedicated consumer video camera? - flareslow - 11-18-2012

Any format, storage, or compression issues?

No difference for me. I'm really happy with the video I get from it but to be honest, I'm not fussy about video. For the family and vacation video I take it's fine.

If you have a steady hand or use a tripod the video is excellent but I don't have a steady hand and without
any kind of built-in Image Stabilization I can't hold it very steady. I have a fairly high end Sony Digital8
camcorder that hasn't been used in years so I guess it has replaced my camcorder so to speak.

Thanks for the responses. Does the Image Stabilization not work in video mode?

Not that I'm aware of.

Our local Sam's Club has it marked down to $319 plus tax. I was thinking I could get it for my wife for Christmas to kill 2 birds with one stone. She has a good tripod with a video head.

yes, it does - and it works quite well.

I DO have a steady hand and with the stabilization, sometimes my videos look like they were tripod mounted...

I've never owned a video camera, so I can't compare, but the SX40 video is BY FAR the best I've seen on a point&shoot...

here's one of mine shot at full zoom:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ls1lMxIN9vE

image quality isn't great here, partly my fault and partly youtube's fault

Sweet! How do I turn it on?

Hal, you shot that handheld? That was great!

It's on by default - go to the menu and select IS (Image Stabilization) and it should be on 'continuous'.
