Is it a good idea? - kap - 01-04-2006

My tenant, a hard-working and responsible single working mother of a teenager, is planning on signing up for Verizon DSL. The monthly charge of $14.95 will pose a financial hardship for her. So I offered to split the bill with her. I asked her to think about it then let us know.
She's been our tenant for a year and two months now. We haven't increased the rent because she's been a good tenant though at times she's not on Earth.
Do you gals and guys think this is a good idea for us to split the cost of a shared DSL connection. Her Windows PC will be wired while our Mac powerbooks will be wireless.

At $15 a month, how bad could it get? I say do it.

Wha about viri? Would it only be potentially a windows problem and not affect (the connection) the mac?

just make sure you are the one to setup the router, and for the love of all things, change the default password to something only you know.

Heck, do it, and claim the $15 a month as a business expense as a perk for the renter, and ask her to pay half.

So you are going to pay her about $8 a month or will you deduct it from the rent(since it will be part of her phone bill)? Plus fees it comes to $16 and change.

Its more than likely a Westell DSL modem (cheap) that comes with the plan. Have her signup online to get the first month free, plus the $20 activation fee. And dont forget to buy a wireless router.

And do what mikebw said. You setup everything.

Buying a wireless router? Doesn't Verizon provide a modem/wireless router combo to its customers?
The reason why we prefered to let the tenant be responsible for the router administration because I would rather not be her life time tech support specialist. I have already been one in advertently with my uncle/aunt (Mac and PC), brother (Mac), an elderly neighbor (PC), friend (Mac) and her daughter (PC). No more please.
No, we'd want to keep things simple: We'd pay her our share of the expense with a personal check. She continue to pay her rent in full. Regarding phone bill, she pays hers and we pay ours. These are two separate lines ... the rental is an attached (common wall) one bedroom.

As long as the division line is clear I guess it won't matter whose name it is registered to.
