Google to sell 200.00 computers at Walmart? - samintx - 01-04-2006 WSJ reports this...a 400.00 one Walmart is selling would not be interesting to me...200? that would include a case and a mouse? Google going into the computer business?? This will be interesting. Re: Google to sell 200.00 computers at Walmart? - Guitarman - 01-04-2006 I heard they're trying to make a $200 laptop!!! Re: Google to sell 200.00 computers at Walmart? - hal - 01-04-2006 I always thought that AOL should have done just this back in thier heyday. Offer an AOL dedicated machine with all inhouse OS and apps. Would have been a killer... Re: Google to sell 200.00 computers at Walmart? - Dennis S - 01-04-2006 I think it's time for this to work. If a person had no computer and only $200 to spend, the world of Google would be worth the money. I believe they probably have the talent, money and knack of making a good OS. Re: Google to sell 200.00 computers at Walmart? - SteveJobs - 01-04-2006 Boy, I don't. I'll bet ya $5 Re: Google to sell 200.00 computers at Walmart? - bill b - 01-04-2006 I bet they sell a few more than 200 $200.00 computers. Not quite sure the final product will be defined as a typical "PC", though. Re: Google to sell 200.00 computers at Walmart? - bangman - 01-05-2006 Google's not selling anything at Walmart. Not the right target (no pun) demo for them. Re: Google to sell 200.00 computers at Walmart? - SteveO - 01-05-2006 WSJ rarely gets that kind of scoop wrong. Agreed, it won't be a true PC, though...will likely be more of an "internet hub" type of machine. Somebody tried to make a go of it with this type of machine back in '00 or so. I remember seeing ads in my Sunday paper "USA WEEKEND" or whatever those little tabloids are with columns, celeb interviews, etc. Price point was cheap vs. a regular pc at the time...want to say it was around $399 or so. I think it had a 14" screen and a keyboard and mouse, very small footprint such that you could put it on a kitchen counter. Guess that machine was just a few years ahead of its time. Anybody remember it? Anybody remember it? One of my coworkers bought one, and I think never figured out how to use it. I really don't think there ever will be a time for that particular sort of machine. |
