It only seems that way because you are watching it on NBC.
They will get the hint when their coverage is beaten out by reruns of 'MacHale's Navy' on the Antiquities Channel

I don't understand why the rights to distribute coverage of an international event are restricted.
I would mind NBC's stranglehold less if the company that owns the pipes didn't also own the content (e.g. Comcast.)
The two should be divested.

But did you really need to ask? I suspect the USA rights heavily subsidize the entire enterprise.
