Need New Macbook Pro - Kraniac - 04-28-2015

Looking at this machine locally on Craigs

MacBook Pro Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013
2.7 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
512 GB SSD
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB

asking $1650

Any red lights on this year of MBP's?

: )

Looks like a good deal on a good machine to me.

Check the retina screen for ghosting. Perhaps the easiest way is to load up mlb.com, use the vertical blue bars. If you move the window and still see the vertical blue imprint (as a grey haze) on a white background, that machine has the dreaded retina panel problem.

You might be fine - we have two similar machines, one resulted in ghosting, another is fine so far.

Re: Need New Macbook Pro - Kraniac - 04-28-2015

Thanks Sekker,

I just looked at the machine..did some ghosting tests and didn't see any obvious signs of residual image stuff..tried to leave a contrasty image on the screen for as long as was possible..did MLB and didn't see anything..im not sure i made it to the 7 minute mark that some recommend before flashing off to a nuetral screen.

Thing seems fine but a question or two

This is a early 2013 machine..wondering what operating system it came with..My current machine is running Mavericks with no problems..no issues with any of my software etc..

I really dont like the Yosemite interface..

Is there any way to wipe it and load it up with an earlier OS?

Even Mountain lion? OR, is that just stupid..

And

Is the process of using Migration Assistant with Thunderbolt the same as with Firewire?

Im guessing I need to go buy a Thunder to Thunder cable..

: )

That machine will run earlier Mac OSes just fine. I would stick with Mavericks if you are using Mavericks now. I have a mid-2012 model, running Mavericks fine.

Re: Need New Macbook Pro - Kraniac - 04-29-2015

Sekker..the issue here is I don't own a copy of Mavericks..

My last machine came with it already. I always buy used so there it was but no discs

This machine - with Yosemite...been playing on it..i don't like and I hate this version of Safari 8.0.5..

Thinking I'll clone my old drive and do it that way..

Is there a better way to get hold of Mavericks?

(hell, i wish i could run Snow Leopard on it)

Anyhow, the machine feels nice, loving it so far..being back to a 15" screen is heaven and the Retina is about 50 steps up from where i was...

Re: Need New Macbook Pro - sekker - 04-29-2015

Mavericks is free from Apple.

Sadly, its not. You can't even buy it.

Theres no need for a T-bolt cable, just use ethernet.

Cloning would be a good idea IMHO. Mavericks is the way to go.

FWIW, macs havent shipped with "discs" in 5+ years.

Yea, it was free when it was available, but as soon as Apple releases a new OS (Yosemite), the previous OS is no longer available for "purchase", but you can still download it if you previously "purchased" it.

You could try wiping the drive and using internet recovery. It will install whatever OS originally shipped with the computer (which might be Mountain Lion though, unless this one was sold late enough for Mavericks).
