What are you all using to download videos from websites these days? - PeterB - 11-19-2015

This has gotten really aggravating. It seems that it's getting harder and harder to get the source file... for example, I'd like to download the video from this webpage:

http://www.clontech.com/US/Thats_Good_Science/Watch_the_Videos/Food_Supply

Is there a relatively simple, single-click way to do this?

If all else fails, I'll bring the video up to full screen, go it a quiet room and screen grab it using Screencast-O-Matic.

I've had good luck with YouTube Hunter, but I've only used it for videos on the YouTube site.

Surprisingly, Chrome (under Windows) with the Real Downloader extension was able to capture it. It fails on plain ol' YouTube quite a bit (partly because Google owns YT now).

Youtube: right click and do "Save as"

Others: Clip Grap

In Safari, it's 5 clicks: Load the page as though you were using an iPad so you don't get that Flash garbage, then…

[list=5]
  • start playing the video
  • option-command-I (to show the Web Inspector)
  • click the 'target' icon (to enable 'point-to-inspect' mode)
  • command-click the video link (to show the video as a standalone in a separate tab)
  • control-click (or "right-click" for you PC-ish users) the playing video to get the contextual (or "context" for you PC-ish users) menu then select download)

    The URL for the video is http://brightcove.vo.llnwd.net/e1/uds/pd/1050259872001/1050259872001_4138623880001_4138576454001.mp4?playerId=1052109978001&lineupId=&affiliateId=&pubId=1050259872001&videoId=4138576454001

    I don't normally use FireFox but Video DownloadHelper extension still seems to work fine. I just DL'ed to short videos in HD.

    I like ClipGrab too... although I think it seems a little shady in that it will suddenly stop working one day until you you update to the latest version.

    I still use QuickTime and Safari on my 10.5.8 G5. Later versions of Safar don't readily let you get the URL of the actual movie. And some sites manage to block Safar from showing the URL.
