Democrats pulled off a shocking upset to win a rural Wisconsin state senate seat Tuesday night, triggering alarm bells for Republicans across the state and nation.
Democrat Patty Schachtner defeated a well-known local Republican in a district that President Trump had carried by a whopping 55 percent to 38 percent just over a year ago.
Wisconsin Republicans sounded the alarm about what the results could mean, including that Gov. Scott Walker ®, who faces reelection next fall, suddenly looks considerably more vulnerable than he did one day ago.

The district where Democrats triumphed last night covers the western sliver of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, encompassing some Minneapolis exurbs as well as a good swath of rural territory. Trump won it big after Romney carried it by a six-point margin in 2012, and it’s long been one of Republicans’ best-performing parts of the state. No Democrat has held this state senate seat in nearly two decades.
But Schachtner won by a nine-point margin despite the district’s strong GOP lean and her allies being outspent by GOP outside groups by a comfortable margin.

Yes, the win is significant because both the GOP and Dems ran a decent candidate. This wasn’t a ‘Jones vs Moore’ scenario at all.
For the fall election, the generic ballot is going to favor Dems by at least 8 points even IF there is a lot of reversion to the mean (current Dem bonus is closer to +13).
That means that finding decent candidates in as MANY races as possible is the critical step these next 2 months.

There already are 43 Democrats, many of them with plenty of campaign cash, lined up to challenge Republicans in the top seven [California] districts targeted by their party. And with more than seven weeks to go before the March 9 filing deadline, that number could grow.

There's always a push-back at the mid-term, so what we really need to see is that push-back still occurring 3 years from now.

I kinda feel sorry for California republicans - they had a clear plan after 2012. They HAD to get to latin and black voters. It was critical. Hell, many repubs in office ARE latin. But Trump continuously adds more fuel to the anti-republican fire in calif. They are SO DOOMED. I wonder if there will be another repub statewide office holder in my lifetime. It aint lookin good for them...

Dems take CA and New England, and they have the House. Trump knows this - it'll change the entire dynamic of impeachment etc.
It's all about getting the Senate.

I think things look good for a majority, but even if Dems win EVERY SINGLE SEAT they'll only get 59.

The Dems still don't know what they are for. I don't know if only being Anti-45 will get them much past this year's election.
