What brands do we like for Ranges? - C(-)ris - 10-10-2021
Our electric range decided that it didn't want to maintain temperature anymore. That sure what is wrong with it. It is burning the food on the top. I suspect something with the lower element, but it is also displaying a random error code that requires the breaker to be turned off to clear or it just shuts off in the middle of cooking. It was here when we bought the house 5 years ago and is likely from 2011, and honestly it is probably the worst range I've ever used. Even when it worked it took forever to heat up to temp and we were constantly cooking food for way longer than it should take.
I couldn't find much of any information on troubleshooting or repairing it. Model number is MER8772WB. But even a temp sensor is $125, which is way more than I am willing to spend.
I'm probably going to switch to gas, just need to find out who to call to get a gas line run and the outlet changed over from 240V to 120V. Doubtful I will purchase another Maytag given how poor this one has performed. I've been a die hard Kenmore person, but with Sears gone not sure what brands are reliably reliable.

At minimum, you should have a good vent over the stove. Few people do and many kitchens are built in such a way as to make it impossible.

it's a Maytag from their bad period before being bought by whirlpool.
if you want to maintain, try the guys at Appliance411.com.
Very helpful. But if it were me, I wouldn't bother. It's likely the main pcb.
Prolly hard to find and $$$.

Just switching from electric to gas isn't as easy as you might think. There are code requirements. Found that out when my parents switched from electric to gas. In addition to having a plumber run the gas line, they had to change the material in the backsplash.
That said, I'd only purchase a range that is slide in with all of the controls in the front. I'd want true self-cleaning, not "steam-cleaning" which is kinda sorta like but not as good as true self-cleaning. And, if possible, racks with ball-bearings to make them super easy to slide in and out of the oven.
The ranges that fit my requirements tend to be more expensive models. You want some of the above features, you have to be prepared to pay for them. Even if you're not purchasing a model from a high end brand.

i heard that report. glad there’s no more always burning pilot light but as i told my son they’ll have to pry my gas range from my cold, dead hands.

If you are going to need to run gas lines and put in exhaust venting, it may be just as economical to go with an induction range.
