Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - C(-)ris - 01-31-2022 Since we have forumites from all over the nation and beyond... I'm curious what type of device schools are using for 1:1 devices for students and if they send them home every night or not. Re: Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - Buzz - 01-31-2022 What about those of us whose kids were out of school before 1:1 devices became mainstream? == Re: Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - jdc - 01-31-2022 brand new $280 million high school in middle/upper class white hood - 13" HP chromebooks. No idea on specs, but seem fine. touchscreen. USB C charging. Re: Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - DP - 01-31-2022 Never heard of "1:1" devices but I have no kids either. Are they what schools give out to the kids for homework, etc.? Re: Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - Ombligo - 01-31-2022 Our district gives iPads to every student from 3rd grade up. The high schools have asked to be switched to Chromebooks but district tech said it isn't an option. For a while, many students started bringing their own laptops but then district tech locked down the internet to only district-supplied devices. Students are given an iPad in third grade that they keep until middle school, then a new one is issued which is then replaced when they start high school. When the student turns it in when moving to the next level or graduates, the iPad is retired. Having seen the situation in person, the high schools are right. The older students would do much better with Chromebooks or laptops. Students and teachers hate the iPads, but the district doesn't care what the users think, only what the tech supervisor decides is best. Re: Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - macphanatic - 01-31-2022 Younger kids get iPads. Older ones get a mix of Chromebooks and Surfaces. Chromebooks for those whose classes don't require anything better. However, probably over 50% of the kids use a parent supplied device. Mine uses a MBA. Hates the Chromebook and the Surface. Chromebook is too limited for schoolwork. Surface keyboard sucks and had software and hardware issues. Uses a windows desktop for gaming and Autocad. Re: Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - BernDog - 01-31-2022 Didn’t vote because I have four different answers. My kids are/have been home schooled. Their school (my wife and I) do 1:1 MacBook Airs. My two oldest just started high school at the private Catholic school this year where they don’t have a 1:1 program. They still use their Macs. I teach in the public school the next town/state over, and they do chrome books. I used to teach in the public system we live in until a couple years ago. They do 1:1 Windows. Re: Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - gabester - 01-31-2022 High school district and middle schools of elementary district use Chromebooks. The HS uses a really outdated Lenovo model that has performance issues with Zoom and/or more than about 4 tabs open. The middle schools and 4/5th grades of elementary schools use Acer Chromebooks, younger grades are iPads. The middle schools have some design/robotics classes where they use MacBooks in the classroom but cannot bring them home. Nearby private church school uses Lenovo Windows laptops. Re: Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - Lux Interior - 01-31-2022 Elementary school was iPads, but they weren't take-home. Middle-High is Chromebooks issued to the student to take home. Re: Professional Curiosity: What do your kids schools use for 1:1 Devices? - mrbigstuff - 01-31-2022 We spent $3 million* on ipads that were not used much after about 3 years and were in school only. I fought against this expenditure, as I could see the futility in it. All middle school and high schoolkids are on chromebook which seem to have a slightly longer shelf life. * that included other tech not just ipads |
