Rec's for USB cables and SSD case. - kj - 01-27-2023 I need some new usb A/B cables and I noticed a cable that came with a fairly expensive audio interface fits so much nicer and tighter and stable than any other cable I've had. Does anyone have any recommendations for cables that are nice like this? Related, I would like one with right-angle, but not going the usual way, but "down". Like, if you plug it into the laptop, it would interfere if you set it on a table (I would have laptop in a stand). I need to connect laptop to something below, and normal ones have too much leverage, which worries me. Second, is there a more reasonably priced hard drive case that would work with the proprietary apple drive out of my 2015 macbook pro? OWC ones cost more than it's worth to me. Re: Rec's for USB cables and SSD case. - PeterW - 01-27-2023 Here’s a case on Amazon that is cheaper - https://www.amazon.com/Enclosure-MacBook-Portable-Storage-Compatible/dp/B09PFQX277/ref=sr_1_3?crid=31HPPPAJ47IY7&keywords=Acasis+Apple&qid=1674839787&sprefix=acasis+apple%2Caps%2C216&sr=8-3&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18ed3cb5-28d5-4975-8bc7-93deae8f9840 Re: Rec's for USB cables and SSD case. - kj - 01-27-2023 PeterW wrote: Cool, that's an option. I still don't know if that's worth it to me for what I would use it for, but it's an option. Actually, OWC's is pretty much the same price. https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MAU3ENP1AWO/ Re: Rec's for USB cables and SSD case. - Gareth - 01-27-2023 kj wrote: Yea, you pretty much have to wait for an OWC Garage Sale or find one used to get a better price. It's silly, but I feel guilty having that ssd just laying around. But not 70 bones guilty, and I don't REALLY need it for anything. I was looking at the USB cable (the really nice one) and it is mostly the usb B end that fits nice, and I realized it fits flush with the interface, etc, and is clearly made custom for the interface. I don't know that I can expect that with one I buy off amazon. Oh well. Re: Rec's for USB cables and SSD case. - Robert M - 01-27-2023 kj, What is the capacity of the Apple SSD? It may not be worth putting into a box if it's a lower capacity models. You'd be better off stashing it in case you need to use the drive for a firmware update on the machine. If you need an external SSD, even a premade 500GB USB 3.2 SSD is only about $50 to $60 dollars. Robert Re: Rec's for USB cables and SSD case. - Harbourmaster - 01-28-2023 For cables with 90º ends, my go to these days is https://titanpowerplus.com/ The connectors are not as bulky as they look in the illustrations on the sales pages. I replaced it because it's only 128gb, but it's just sitting there, and I'm 100% sure there aren't going to be firmware updates for a 2015 MacBook Pro. But yeah, I guess it's just going to sit there. I need something that goes 90 degrees down. I've seen some, but they look terrible quality. Plus I need one that's like a printer usb cable, usb a/b, or whatever it's actually called. I guess I'm on my own, which isn't so bad I guess. Take care. Re: Rec's for USB cables and SSD case. - Robert M - 01-29-2023 kj, Actually, whether or not you might need to apply a firmware update to a 2015 MBPr is dependent on the OS. I was running Mojave on my 2015 MBPr and needed to install a firmware update to bring it to Monterey. That was an issue since I didn't have the original Apple 512GB SSD in it. I'dlong since replaced the original drive with an OWC 1TB SSD. To do the update, I had to find the original drive, reinstall it into the MBPr, nuke and pave it, do the firmware update and then remove it again. It was a big honkin' nuisance. Such a nuisance that I nearly bought another OEM Apple SSD to avoid pulling the original SSD from its enclosure, where it was very happy serving as a clone of a different machine. Robert |
