Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - GGD - 12-07-2008 The other day in the grocery store I noticed that the 12-Pack of soda cans had been downsized to an 8-Pack. So far it only seemed to be Pepsi products, the Coke products were still 12-Packs. I'm wondering if they might start tinkering with the 12oz can, or 2-Liter bottle sizes in the future. In the past few years, ice cream has gone from 1/2 gallon (which I remember as a standard for many decades) to 1.75 Quarts and then 1.5 Quarts. What other long time packaging standards have you noticed changing? Re: Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - onthedownlow - 12-07-2008 No surprises there. Really nothing to worry about...just a market thing - and not just in the soda business...beer too... They've had 8-packs....30-packs....16-packs for years and years....all kinds of 'odd' sizes (other than the what-we-are-used-to-standard of 6, 12, 24, etc.). Usually the distributor will request such sizes to see if they might sell better in their respective market - so they'll do a trial run....if they sell okay, great....they might keep'em and order more and up it from there...or just discontinue selling those sized-packs altogether. Sometimes the producer/brewery will request the distributors to put these out in certain markets too...sort of a force of hand, but not really - just to gauge the market. Depending on where you are at in the country, you'll find that there are all types of packaging for the same products that are sold 'normally' there, and never even heard of in your neck of the woods. ...fyi, I grew up in an Anheuser-Busch distributorship/wholesaler family - so I've seen and handled this stuff first-hand. There are all sorts of crazy packaging options for canned and bottled products. Re: Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - miK. - 12-07-2008 These aren't packaging so much as portion observations... • What happened to a dozen wings? It's now 10 wings at most pizza places. (for more $) • Drinks -> Medium and Large at most fast food places. The small is "child only"... Re: Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - John B. - 12-07-2008 It wouldn't be a bother, except around here the retailers are selling the 8-packs at the same price point they used to sell the 12-packs at. So basically the price of your soda, per can, went up by 33%, unless you're buying it on a special sale (like Target last week had 6 Pepsi 8-packs for $15, and then gave you a $5 gift card for the effort). Re: Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - onthedownlow - 12-07-2008 Among other reasons, it's a threshold thing. Re: Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - Numo - 12-07-2008 I was sitting in a particular room in my house a couple of weeks ago when I noticed that something seemed different about the toliet paper. Upon closer examination, I realized that the roll was 1/4-3/8" shorter in width than what it had been in the past. This is the final insult! Re: Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - Rick-o - 12-07-2008 I've seen this on several products over the years. The latest was Reynold's Heavy-Duty Aluminum Foil. I always get a twin pack at Sam's Club when I need foil, but last time I noticed the package was a different color and the boxes were smaller. Written on the box: "Now Space Saving Carton! Same Length". So they changed it to save me some space! That's wonderful, except it's not really saving me any more space, and the foil is about as thick as regular aluminum foil once was. Thanks Reynold's, I'm soooo glad you're looking out for your customers!8-) Re: Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - tronnei - 12-07-2008 Article from 5 days ago: http://www.startribune.com/business/35343634.html?elr=KArksUUUU Re: Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - Lee3 - 12-07-2008 10 packs of Coke at Walmart or maybe it was Target. I should really stop drinking that stuff. Re: Latest packaging downsizing - the 12 pack - Ombligo - 12-07-2008 2 ltr bottles of soda is an American thing.. In Central America, the Caribbean and South America you'll see 1 ltr bottles primarily. There will be some 3 ltr's of bargain brands but those are the exception. I wouldn't be surprised to see that happening here but who'll go first? Coke or Pepsi? |
