Goodwill score! Solid Oak Table - ztirffritz - 12-09-2008 I bought this table today at the local Goodwill store. $150. I used some fine steel wool on it to clean the surface and get out some stains, then rubbed it down with Tung Oil. It is about 4-5cm thick. Solid oak. Really well made. I'm pretty happy with my find. I wonder why someone would give it away unless their floor couldn't support it... ![]() ![]() Re: Goodwill score! Solid Oak Table - Fritz - 12-09-2008 you didn't hear about the man eating oak tables ......... huh? Re: Goodwill score! Solid Oak Table - Stephanie - 12-09-2008 I love oak tables and I can do one better on this ![]() A few months ago, someone advertised a dining table & 5 chairs on Freecycle. I responded. They sent pics. Looked to be a beautiful round oak table with 2 leaves & 5 matching chairs. Turned out that all are solid oak (definitely no veneer) from Pennsylvania House (from back when they were made in the US). Beautiful condition except for some minor scratches on one part of the top. My dad, who does a lot of woodworking, took a look at it and said that all it needs is to have the top sanded and refinished. Even without doing so, it still looks great. Needless to say, I thanked the offeror profusely. PS. Almost forgot - congrats on the find. Solid wood at an affordable price is always a good thing! Re: Goodwill score! Solid Oak Table - blooz - 12-09-2008 I bet the weight has something to do wih it. I have a smaller oak round claw-foot that I've been lugging around for decades. Part of the reason I've lived in this house so long is that i don't have to move the damn thing… Re: Goodwill score! Solid Oak Table - threeprong - 12-09-2008 If it's not Wenge or Beech it's not "in style" so folks are departing with their solid oak, medium finish pieces. In another 10-20 years that thing will be worth a purdy penny. 3P Re: Goodwill score! Solid Oak Table - Racer X - 12-09-2008 good thick solid wood is always welcome...... Re: Goodwill score! Solid Oak Table - Robert M - 12-09-2008 Hi everyone, I doubt weight had anything to do with the former owner getting rid of the table. The owner might have moved and didn't want to take it. The table may have been a part of someone's estate and the survivors had no need for it. The former owners may have remodeled and found the old table didn't suit the decor. Regardless, it's a great find! I'm going too have to start looking at goodwill because I need furnishing for my place. Then again, I've had great luck dumpster diving. In the last few months, I found a set of silverplate from the 1930s in near mint condition. Service for eight. I also found a 52" dining room table with two leafs and pads, two chests of draws (one of which is an antique and in good condition the other recently made and in excellent condition, two antique dining room chairs and much more! The 52" dining room table is in excellent condition. I'd use the table in my place but it's too long for my kitchen and I don't have the space for it in my living room. Grrrrr! I find it absolutely astonishing what some people will just leave at the curb. Astonishing. Robert Re: Goodwill score! We put it all out at the curb and some of it got picked up by the neighbors, but there was a couch that wound up in the trash truck, along with several glasses and other kitchen items. I was able to get some things posted on Craigslist and taken away too, but when time runs out you just gotta dump it sometimes. |
