Twitter-is this really a necessary and important website? - samintx - 03-08-2009

I really don't care to know exactly what someone is doing at any particular moment...so I don't Twitter...but do you? Do you find it useful?

All the comments on TV are "it is wonderful" "love it" "great"......

I feel like I am getting too obsessed with online stuff as it is. The last thing I need is to start checking in with one and all night and day. I am still trying to understand the whole "$tevie is picking the spinach out of her teeth right this minute" Facebook nonsense.

Twitter is one of several social networking tools, and like any tool or resource, it can be useful, useless, or abused depending on who's using it.

Like people who *must* chain-email DIRE WARNINGS that have been at Snopes for God knows how long, some people will "tweet" about anything. That doesn't mean Twitter *isn't* useful and doesn't have real value for some people.

You don't need to be one of those people to use Twitter.

There are uses for it. During some recent emergency events people sending Twitter updates from their phones where able provide real-time feedback about what was happening over a large area effectively crowdsourcing the news. One example that I know of was brushfires in SoCal. I've also found that it can be useful for alerting people to pending webcasts from my iPhone.

Who would be a Twittee?

Yeah, it's tool.

It fills a very narrow internet niche that lies between instant chat and email and is less personal than a facebook status update.

It's exactly like the rest of the internet. The usefulness lies right at or around 10% or so.

It's well past the point of being "cool"... if it ever was. I make use of it for that 10% of info I wouldn't normally be able to extract. Don't find it necessary to post much myself even though it would mesh well with me being self-absorbed.
