new macpro furnace - bazookaman - 10-08-2009

A friend of mine just got a new macpro and a new 30" apple monitor. He claims that it has raised the ambient temp in his office by several noticeable degrees. He was just wondering if this is normal for these machines. Its not only his macpro that is pouring out the heat but his display as well. He has an older 30" and it doesn't put out nearly as much heat as the new one. he had a coworker see if he could tell and apparently the heat coming off was pretty obvious.

A Mac Pro should put out less heat than a G5. Does he have a dual quad or a single quad?

send it to me this winter - It will keep my place warm Smile

do the new displays have more vents for escaping heat?

My G5 2.5 GHz raises the temperature in my bonus room/home office by a good five degrees during the summer. I'm constantly putting it to sleep whenever I leave the room and also use a window AC unit. Of course, during the winter, it stay nice and toasty.

I thought the MacPro was better on the heat but maybe not.

So what is he comparing it to?

Re: new macpro furnace - bazookaman - 10-09-2009

I believe he had either an old G5 or an older Macpro. Either way, it shouldn't be hotter right? His new MacPro is probably a quad. I'm sure they spared no expense. And his new 30inch monitor is WAY hotter than his old 30 inch monitor. Both Apple displays.

Mac Pros are either quads or dual quads. If his last one was a Mac Pro quad, and the new one is a dual quad, that would put out more heat. Plus newer video cards put out more heat as well.

I used to have a dual 2.0 G5, and replaced it with a quad Mac Pro. The Mac Pro is significantly cooler than the G5. And I have 5 hard drives in the Mac Pro.

what about the display? are they supposed to put out that much heat? Or at least that much more than the previous incarnation?
