Corns are bad for dogs? - kap - 04-07-2006

Over the weekend our doggie and I paid a visit to my aunt's house. I forgot to bring the food for the doggie so I stopped by a local pet store to make some purchase. I was going to buy Purina but the store owner strongly recommended California Natural brand because it contained no corns in the ingredients. Hence, CN was a better choice than other dog food brands. I bought one small bag. The dog didn't jump for joy but he did eat it because he was hungry. He's still alive and kicking right now. What do y'all think?

Some (many?) dogs do not digest heavy cellulose like whole corn kernels very well. I can not remember many wolf or dog packs raiding corn fields when they get hungry. It is reallly just a cheap filler. (ps: corn, the food, is singular)

Neither do humans. Check for yourself the next time you...

Here is an interesting fact: Science Diet is supposed to be the best food for dogs. This brand also contains corn in its ingredients! The pet store owner said he's selling SC simply because there are buyers.

Thanks for the correction, Filliam. As you can tell English is not my first language.

Why sure Purina has been killing dogs for years. I can't
remember the last I saw undigested corn in dog poop but I
remember the last I saw it in my own. Give me a break. This
was advise from a pet store owner wanting to sell something
more expensive. My cat had an bad outbreak of fleas some
years ago and a Pet supply store owner recommended a certain
product and assured me it wasn't a dip but a shampoo. Get
home start reading it sure enough it's a dip. This was the
owner and not some teenagers working part-time. Our dog
refuses to eat whole corn and that's fine but he'll sure chew
on a corn cob after we're through with it, probably because of
the butter. I also can't remember seeing any corn product
large enough to recognize it as such in any dog food chunks.

Corn is fine for him. If he likes the Purina and he's healthy give it to him.

Most dogs I have seen will eat pretty much whatever you put in front of them or whatever they happen to find that smells appealing. If it doesn't agree with them they will simply throw it up and try eating it again. Dogs have been eating "people food" for the past 15,000+ years since we domesticated them. That was the deal from the beginning, they got to sleep by the fire, chew on the bone, and clean the plates in exchange for barking when they heard a noise.

One of my dogs used to eat the corn right off of the cob if you held it for her. Another would eat the entire thing cob and all. Never seemed to bother either of them.
