4 is a little young to really ski, but lots of people do it. I see kids as young as 3 regularly. I can't remember when we started, my daughter might have been 5 (the little hill only has a rope tow and a t bar, but we moved up to the real mountain that year). The parent lifts them on, and should be making sure they stay on (I still keep a close eye on my kids, although both will be old enough this year to ride alone or with a friend.

There are parents who allow children at that age and younger watch graphic adult movies. play violent video games and ride motorized scooters.

If the parent got on that lift with her, they must be in bad shape too...I cant imagine that ride up not knowing what's going on with your child.

I hope that all turns out well...

its interesting that you group all those things together

Doesn't seem that uncommon to me. As long as the kid is riding with an adult I don't have an issue with it. Accidents happen...would you feel better if it was an 8-year old who fell off the chairlift...or a 50 year old?

On my job at an all day day care center for pre-K, I have met parents who allow just two of those three. And those exposures show up in the children's behaviors at school. The types of behaviors I did not think they could possess at such age.

My sister and I were on ski lifts when we were 5 and 7, respectively.

I don't really see what's wrong with it. I see that all the time. It is part of downhill skiing unless you want to do cross-country skiing.

I can hear a law suit coming up the lift.
Parents sue for poor safety on the chair lifts.
Lift prices go up another 10% to cover the industry.
