Yeah, I wonder if they got the machine for repair ("no sound" ), confirmed that the sound was out and then just figured it was easier to toss it. What a waste. I'm glad I happened by there...

Know anyone with a similar iMac? You could use their Install Disc 1 to run the Apple Hardware Test on it. If not, you might be able to find a disc image of it out on the torrents.

I have one of those now that I got when they first came out. It was a huge improvement over the G4 Sawtooth I had been using.

no audio sounds good to me.

Have you popped it open to check the speaker and head phone jack connections to the motherboard? I don't know if they're easily visible in that model, though.

I haven't opened it up. The Griffin iMic works fine, though I hate to "waste" using it on the iMac if I could get the onboard audio to work. It is in such beautiful shape - I don't want to mess it up by opening it. I'll get the RAM tomorrow and install it.

It came with a fresh SL on it - right from the sign in screen. So I doubt it is a software problem.

17" or 20"?

There are tips on various boards to look inside the audio port-- the red light should not be on if there's nothing plugged in-- supposedly tickling it with a toothpick can unjam the switch that tells it something is plugged in.

But if you've got external speakers, who cares . . .

Definitely check this out. Had this happen on my old MBP and thought the audio was dead. One night after I turned the lights out I saw the red glow coming from the minijack and realized the optical out was stuck. The only fix is to manually poke around with a toothpick and untrigger the button.

Before realizing this no audio on headphones or built in speaker.
