Macs will be fine. Other PCs with BIOS can't have larger boot drives than 2TB because of the MBR limitation. I believe newer versions of Windows can boot from GPT, but you need a motherboard with EFI.

That's my understanding, but I may be glossing over the finer points.

EFI = eletronic fuel injection

There are physical limitations involved too. The data density on the discs is such that you can't write to one section without inadvertently affecting the bits next to it. And they can only fit so many platters inside the enclosure and remain within the standard size. I read that they had now found a way around the data density issue but it would be 2-4 years before we see those drives and they would only bump up capacities by about 20% if I remember correctly.

For the reasons others have stated, we're stuck at 2TB until they get it sorted out.

The SSDs still have a long way to go before they're competitive.

Aside from the price/GB, they have a much, much lower lifetime for their write cycles. At this point they can't be a direct replacement for the high rewrite capability of a hard drive.

I'd love to see a replacement technology for hard drives that doesn't involve a noise-making, vibration-making device. I predict that we will have a new high-density technology that will leapfrog over the current flash technology to fill this need.

it's time to step up to a RAID...

If you don't understand an acronym, try searching for the meaning. The web is wonderfully helpful with this sort of thing.

Do I have to start spelling out International Business Machines, National Security Agency and National Institutes of Health as well?

silvarios, he understood the meaning of the acronym... just not in this context Wink

To many people CSS means Counter Strike Source.

But when are we gonna get perpendicular?
