Letting Democrats pick the "electable" Republican candidate gave us McCain, the media darling, the moderate, the maverick.

I think cbelt is on the right track in the OP, except that Newt, being Newt, is such a lame candidate he won't take any energy from the Democrats.

You have to remember one of Newt's Big Ideas was to give free laptops to the homeless.

That's why getting into a spitting match with the Dems is a losing proposition. They will always outgive you.

I don't remember why I don't like Newt, but I remember that i don't like newt. if he becomes a factor, i'm sure that i'll relearn why.

I think the real Republican candidates are hanging back and most will wait for the next cycle. Much as some of the hard core right would like to think Obama is a 1-term president, he's going to be hard to beat.

Yep...

Bob Dole anyone ?

I'm contemplating the 'theoretical' candidacy of Mr. Gingrich. After the Democrats successfully demonized him in the 1990's, is the Republican party going to intelligently allow him to be used as a 'Judas Goat'... presenting a nice juicy target for Democratic dirty trick, and therefore removing some level of negative attention from a 'stealth candidate' ?

I wonder.
No link.. this is my personal theory.

this was brought up here about a month ago.

the "thinking" person thinks that Newt is somehow more attractive to the voting populace because he's literate, as opposed to the empty suits (Romney) and down-home (Huckabee) and grizzly shooting grifters (Palin), but really, people don't vote with the intellect in mind, they vote with their mood and their wallets. Newt doesn't have anything to offer other than an appeal to the more calm of the voting public and we haven't seen an appearance by those folks in a very long time.
