Many parts of the Navy, particularly communications systems, operate on "Zulu" (Greenwich) time so having that run constantly makes it somewhat easier to grasp the concept of the changing time zones. The wild ceremonies come from crossing the EQUATOR, which I've technically done a dozen or more times at sea but only celebrated twice--once on each deployment. I was a slimy, slippery wog on the receiving end of this the first time and the giving end the second time.
