Re: Can I get a Scavenging Packrat Leader? - ka jowct - 04-21-2011 i'm hoping my parents will grow tired of waiting for their dual 1.25 MDD to load pages, play videos & will buck up for an Intel Mac. I've got two MDDs here on my personal Island of Obsolete Technology. My original one, an 867 that I bought in fall 2002, still seemed very usable to me until fairly recently, when I finally got everything moved into my G5. If the power supply hadn't died, I'd still be using it as my main machine. I don't recall waiting for pages to load and so forth, but I had a nice graphics card in it. I got the MDD 1.25 to replace the 867; when that one started locking up relentlessly after a ffew minutes of use, I got the G5. Of course, I've since repaired both MDDs. All the 1.25 needed was fresh arctic silver to replace the dry, flaky layer I found when I took off the heat sink. I'm not sure what DVDRW I got last night: System Profiler says TSST-something. Toshiba or Samsung? The Airport card is also a nice find; no need to dig up another ethernet cable for that machine. With those ultra tight Molex connectors, I'm not too surprised someone resorted to just snipping the power cable. Pretty lame, but still kind of understandable. Those power plugs for the internal drives are a beast to pry off, sometimes actually painful. Fortunately, once you've gotten the plug off the first time, it is easier to shift the next time around. I've had to resort to careful leveraging with a needle-nose pliers on some of those little stinkers. |
