JDC,
The mechanisms in my Seagate drives are fine. The design of the system is flawed and the enclosures are garbage. In addition to issues I've noted in the forum, the Firewire 800/USB 2.0 interface of the GoFlex Desk broke recently, The replacement from Seagate is already on its way. It's not the drive since the drive module works when used with other Seagate GoFlex Desk interfaces.

well, the 2TB is your backup drive - if it fails, not as terrible as if your boot drive fails, right?

It's been completely reliable so far, that is after I got eSATA working on my Hackintosh anyway. Very fast drive, using the free AJA System Test utility, tested speeds around 130MB/sec read, and 120MB/sec write through 3.0gbps eSATA.

Missed that one. But, if it's quality is anything like the GoFlex Desk series, I'd pass on it, even for that price.

Still terrible if the backup drive fails because I'd have to replace it. I won't send a drive containing personal data to a drive manufacturer for replacement. Too much of a security risk.

then your answer is clear: buy two backup drives of the same size, and rotate them out on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. keep one off-site/in another location.
