In the old days, when we had to walk uphill to school both ways, before there were implantable lenses, there was a thing called "cataract glasses".....

Some cataract surgery does NOT replace the lens....

How can that be? A cataract is an opaque lens. The only way to fix it is to replace it with something transparent.

Well, davester is correct on this one. In todays world of cataract surgery the original opaque lens is replaced with an IOL of which there are several types. Many years ago before IOL's the patient had to wear extremely thick glasses after the surgery. There is a condition call a secondary cataract, which occurs secondary to the IOL implants where the posterior lens capsule becomes opaque. This is very common and a Yag laser is used to blast a hole in the opaque posterior lens capsule giving the patient clear vision again.

After my cataracted lenses were replaced, many blue things, including blue skies, especially late in the day, were an intensely violet color that I found very strange. My cataracted lenses caused things to appear yellowish-brown, and they were that way for quite a while -- the first time I noticed this was when looking at an 18% gray card used in photography for setting exposure, that I knew for sure wasn't yellowish -- it took about a month for my vision to slowly accomodate to the new clear lenses and to stop seeing the ultra-violet effect.
