I'm with silvarios, the dashes on we new vehicles are way too to cluttered with electronic gadgetry. If they're going
ban cellphones they might as well take away GPS, eating, and whole bunch of other stuff. I seldom ever drive
anymore, maybe a couple times a year but just down the road to the gas station, I don't trust my driving and have
enough sense to realize it. If more people would realize they shouldn't be driving anymore there would be less
accidents.

My Aunt in her late 80's tried to take out her daughters house recently, she said she was mashing the brakes
as hard as she could but it wouldn't stop, she was pressing gas pedal, the evidence showed that. The only thing she was
worried about was not getting her license next time, her children finally took her keys and the Buick is totaled
anyway. We tried to get them to take her keys a long time ago.

35 states have already banned texting while driving, and 9 so far have banned hand held cell phone use while driving for all drivers; 30 have banned all cell phone use by novice drivers.
This 19 year old in Missouri was violating his state's ban on texting while driving if you are under age 21.

how about really stringent driver education at 16 years of age, followed with a probationary period of 3 years, with 10 year re-certifications and every 5 years after that over 65 years of age?

nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Here's a novel concept...
How about just "ban" distracted driving, and save about $500 million in legislative costs trying to ban each and every single possible way to BE "distracted" while driving.

I don't care if someone is texting while driving, or doing their makeup, or changing a diaper while behind the wheel.. they're distracted from driving.
We don't need a separate law for each potential distraction.

I could have sworn Maryland (my state of residence) had distracted driving laws already on the books. Am I wrong? I could have sworn they were referenced when I attended driving school years ago). Not sure why there is a push to keep adding specific bans instead of enforcing the laws already available.

Oh Sweet Jeebus! It is already against the law to drive distracted. In Washington State, is is called "Driving while Inatentive" They just need to enforce it!

I think they should show the videos of actual crashs, to drivers ed students, like they did to us in the 70's, scared the crap out
most of us, but I suppose that would be too harsh on their young minds. Ours were on movie film and not videos.

I don't think there should be a certain age at which you can't text, nobody should be able to text and drive.

"Distracted driving" laws do already exist. But they don't discourage people from engaging in risky behavior like texting while driving. There has to be a primary enforcement element - i.e. you can get a ticket for texting while driving, whether you have caused an accident or not. The officer just has to see you doing it, and of course your texting is easily verifiable in court with cell phone records. Without this, distracted driving laws do little to promote general safety but are just a mechanism for charging drivers after they've caused the accident. (A mechanism that is easy to defeat in court, BTW, because the legal definition of "distracted" is so vague.)

Seatbelts in buses, drive a safe car, enforce the anti-distracted driving laws on the books.

But in the end it comes down to the individual drivers' choices, yours and the texter/drinker's. There are not enough people to police all the rules of the road so it's up to you to do your best.

I'm in agreement with the 'driver overload' that electronic obsessive designers have. Any car with a damn LCD in the center panel is a disaster waiting to happen. Every time I hear one of those car ads for cars with all kinds of electronic gizmo connections showing the driver looking through menus and whatnot... well, it's not going to end well.

Siri level technology will help, once she understands how the great mass of us speak.

I personally think that the best technical solution will be some form of advanced auto pilot concept with swarming technology built in. But that's for interstate travel. Most accidents probably take place at less than 30MPH.

And don't tell me about "GPS' confusion. Driving while unfolding and folding a map is just as bad, even worse.

I agree. I cannot guess the number of times that I have spotted a drunk driver wobbling around on the road, only to see upon passing them that they are in fact reading and/or texting as they drive. They fly through red lights, too. OR the complete opposite: sitting at green lights holding everyone else up as they finish their text.

Is it so hard to go for a while with only your own thoughts for company? If you are so boring that you cannot stand to be alone with yourself during your drive, I doubt that anybody gives a damn what you have to say anyhow.
