I've read some bad things about Logitech and Macs recently; i.e., support has been waning for a couple of major system updates. Read a few of the comments over at MacUpdate; these general sentiments are echoed over at the Logitech Forums (here and here, if you care to read/search). Seems that the last few versions all but dropped Mac support. They're still compatible and work well, as long as you just use the system's own mouse & keyboard preference pane.

I don't get it, though; Logitech used to be such a pro-Mac company. Or am I confusing them with Kensington?

I've been using my Logitech M570 (wireless) w/o any Logitech software since I got it.

And as far as keyboards go, I'm still using the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic 4000. The software works fine; all the extra keys (media playback, page back/forward, favorites, zoom) work great. I'd be using a Microsoft mouse if they still made trackballs.

Yeah, I think you may be. Logitech has only recently become more interested in the mac side.
