...Although you could also set up a point-to-point or site-to-site VPN.

Kind of expensive. I've only seen big businesses do that.

How many devices are you bringing?

A couple laptops and some iOS devices. I am not very good when it comes to networking issues.

Will you be leaving a computer at home with a live Internet connection while you are abroad?

OS X Server in 10.7.4 has a very good VPN service and it's an easy upgrade to a Mac via the App Store.

Ok, well, I use Witopia's VPN service but it's only for my MBP. I don't know how hard or expensive it would be for a multitude of devices. This sounds like an interesting conundrum.

The times of travel will be unpredictable. If it goes down on the US side then you would need someone to get it going again, right?

Yes. Maybe.

Set the Mac's Energy Saver pref to restart after a power failure and put it on a good UPS and you'd probably be okay... but you should have someone to call to reboot it if things go awry.

If you're traveling extensively, it might be a good idea to put two systems in-place, a primary and a fallback. Perhaps set up an old laptop or a Mini at a friend or family-member's house.

Once you've got it going in one location, duplicating the setup at a second location would be piece of cake.

If you've got multiple computers or numerous devices connected to your network, and want for them to be routed through your VPN servers, you will opt to setup a VPN affiliation on your actual router. By doing therefore there ought no to tack together each device severally, as your router can mechanically connect all devices to our service. This can be particularly helpful for connecting devices with no inbuilt VPN support.
