Re: And let's not forget... - Harbourmaster - 09-11-2012 This picture came from a forum members son or daughter (can't remember exactly who) and was taken just a few days before the attacks IIRC. ![]() Re: And let's not forget... - $tevie - 09-11-2012 Black wrote: Not sure that's a bad thing. We never should have let it define us the way we did. I agree. I feel like the huge outpouring all over the internet and media is probably very gratifying for Al Queda. I wish we wouldn't act as if we can't recover from it, because we can and we did. I don't want to downplay the horror this caused for those whose loved ones died, but Al Qaeda wins if we let continue to be shell-shocked by their crimes. Re: And let's not forget... - deckeda - 09-11-2012 Here's something that shows how last year TIME butchered some images, apparently in order to "enhance" the impact of something that certainly didn't need it. http://www.bagnewsnotes.com/2012/09/james-nachtweys-911-eleven-years-later-like-night-and-day/ I can't express adequate words about how I feel what they did. And then the idiot comment questioning if the originals weren't accurate to begin with. Re: And let's not forget... - tenders - 09-11-2012 I was across the street, then and now. Like 9/11/01, today is a Tuesday and pretty much a perfect day in lower Manhattan. A wise leader at the place I worked in 2001 said a few days after the event: My generation looks back over its lifetime and can readily divide every experience they've had into two categories: those that occurred before JFK was assassinated, and those that occurred after. Every single one of us knows exactly where we were when it happened, what we were doing, and who was around us. We all experienced the world differently afterwards. I suspect what we've experienced now is the pivotal event of your generation. Here's what I can offer you from my experience: the world will be different from here on. It will be less pure, less innocent, and more complicated. There may never be a perfect explanation of why it happened, or even how, and there will certainly never be an explanation that is satisfying. In many things you will be challenged, for a while, to find comfort and joy, and you may not feel as ready to trust anything as you used to - both as an individual and as an American. However, things will get better. They will most certainly get better and we will all move, not necessarily on, blindly, but certainly forward, slowly, and as we watch this event recede in the distance we will suddenly look ahead and realize that we are back to full speed or something very close to it again. You'll have to trust me on this, maybe. In the meantime, I suggest you take two very simple steps. Keep your family very close, and (I'm paraphrasing here) get back to work. And there turned out to be a lot of truth and wisdom in that. Re: And let's not forget... - The UnDoug - 09-11-2012 Nice to hear those words of wisdom, tenders. Thanks for sharing. Re: And let's not forget... - dmann - 09-11-2012 On September 11, 2002, I was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin doing a trade show. As it was the first anniversary of the attacks, we were unsure what the "tone" of the day would be. When I walked into the lobby of the hotel, I was greeted by a large table showcasing photos of NYC, Firefighters and other first responders. Some were from the Milwaukee area and traveled to help with the clean up efforts. There were also small flags and some lapel pins with the flag for the guests to take. There was a sign from the hotel that said "Thank you for traveling today." It was unsettling in a way I did not expect. Before the trade show started, we had a moment of silence, said the Pledge of Allegiance and tried to collect ourselves for the work day ahead. A strange day, to be sure. DM Re: And let's not forget... - Rolando - 09-12-2012 I was there 5 years before the attacks. My ex kept all my pics of me up there, on the roof, trying to look up from the bottom. I haven't been back to NYC since 99. I think I would cry if I saw that place again. Re: And let's not forget... - datbeme - 09-12-2012 davester wrote: I agree. Not saying I'm part of the outpouring, but I do know the there is no scenario in which Al Queda "wins." Don't waste a moment of your life giving that a second thought. |
