$tevie, good point, but IMHO pack animals have a desire to be with their packs. Acting as solitary watchdogs is not their nature. Agreed that dogs love to have jobs. Even if that job is to get belly rubs.

Not to belabor my point, but I don't think he is acting as a solitary watchdog. I think he is deriving comfort from being close to his human.
As to how he found his human in the first place, that is a really good question which I can only chalk up to a mystery of Nature. It's pretty awesome however it happened.
