I guess none of you watched the "Dark Angel" series where the police used drones for everything. All of the sudden, one was looking in your 3rd floor window.

If the government said they wanted to put a camera over your house and record everything you did would you be ok with that? Some people might but others would not. Drones are the equivalent of a camera over my house. I don't think the police, or any branch of the government, has the right to monitor me in this fashion. Let them get a warrant if they want pictures of me sunbathing in the nude.

I was with you until your final sentence.

Any excuse to post a pic of young Jessica Alba!

They don't need a drone for that. The government already has satellites that can get a clear picture of your face from up there. The technology already exists, and is in place and in use.

What the drones are doing that is stirring up the pot is that they are visible to the public. They are also cheaper, so more departments can use them.

The government already has satellites

And helicopters that come in other colors than black. We're used to those.

No. Helicopters are visible to the public, but they are manned. The pot stirring is that they could easily be misused, pervasive, and covert. A cop drives down the street, nobody cares if he sees criminal activity (except the criminals). Odds are he won't be peeking in somebody's bedroom window.

What people fear is spying, and they equate constant surveillance with loss of privacy, and expect privacy, even in public. Knowing your every move is watched tends to creep people out.

Thinking that your every move could be watched tends to do the same.

The difference between helicopters, satellites and drones is that drones are inexpensive and will eventually be mass produced. I doubt the government could afford helicopters and satellites to constantly monitor all cities. Drones on the other hand could easily do this task in the near future so the likelihood of abuse is much higher.

Move along, these aren't the drones you're looking for.

Equally important is that continued survaillance, in both public and private settings, carries with it a degree of presumption of criminality/guilt/suspicion. The tenet of presumed innocence is eroded to a degree that becomes dangerous in both practice and in the implications for what the next 'logical' steps may be; we're now too far down the infamous slippery slope.
