Re: Favorite version of Amazing Grace? - hal - 06-18-2013 Some of you really wanna see this: http://www.amazon.com/Bill-Moyers-Amazing-Grace/dp/B005X5XISS/ref=sr_1_7?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1371584956&sr=1-7&keywords=amazing+grace It's one of the most popular and beloved songs in the English language. Transcending race, creed, geography, generation, and social station, Amazing Grace has been recorded more times than any other hymn and is widely credited with transforming lives. Written by John Newton, an English clergyman and former slave-ship captain, the poem was published in 1779 and took on its familiar tune during the Second Great Awakening in the United States. In this inspiring program, Bill Moyers explores the song's origins and enduring power. Produced and directed by Emmy and Peabody winner Elena Mannes, this documentary features illuminating conversations and stirring performances by Johnny Cash, Judy Collins, Jesse Norman, Marion Williams, the Boys Choir of Harlem, shape-note singers, prison inmates, and more. There are 24 renditions in all, no two alike, and each filled with emotion and conviction. With Jeremy Irons as the voice of John Newton. Re: Favorite version of Amazing Grace? - RAMd®d - 06-18-2013 Judy Collins and pretty much any bagpipe version out there. Agreed. I got a lot of Cat Power, but no Amazing Grace. I'll have to check that out. I love pipes and have a lot of music by various pipers. But after the first funeral, it became almost too personal to bear, and never gets any easier. It could be that combined with the Missing Man formations, the song took on far more intensity than I would ever expect. So I like the Judy Collins and Joan Baez renditions, but seldom listen to it with pipes. I have never heard a bad version of Amazing Grace.. even a tone-deaf mute can perform a moving version of the song. Agreed. It's a beautiful song, but I sometimes find it very difficult to listen to. I was working in a movie theater projection booth. From there, I could see all these kleenexes appearing during that scene. That teared me up even more. Hearing it on bagpipes still chokes me up. Re: Favorite version of Amazing Grace? - Zoidberg - 06-18-2013 The one that Skylane first mentions above; I love the bagpipes into the short orchestration used in STAR TREK II. This made me start thinking about all the different versions of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah'. That's another interesting rabbit hole to explore. There are probably hundreds of different covers of that song. Jeff Buckley's is still my favorite though.
