Wow, she's brave. Now make the sister and the boyfriend tie the knot. I hope she and the "boyfriend in law" get well asap.

Wow, what a gift for Xmas, and what a testament to the kind of family you have. Blessings upon you all, and best wishes to the donor/donee[?] for successful, uncomplicated surgeries.

I'm so proud of her. She's donating to her sister's longtime boyfriend who has been on dialysis and the kidney waiting list for over a year.

Does anyone here have any experience with organ donation and the healing time/process? My daughter has not been a hospital patient since her birth. Coincidentally, she's donating on Dec 19, her 36th birthday!

I have no medical advice. I encourage longtime boyfriend to out a ring on it for the sister.

"Wow, RoadToad, your daughter is very brave. My guess she was raised
with a strong diet of morals and a healthy dose of ethics. You have good
reason to be proud.
As dmann said, please keep us informed."

Wow.. how amazing. Kudos to her... The saying about "The best gift is a gift of yourself" is doubly true for her.

So, I guess the actual girlfriend was not a match? Or, she had donated previously?

Best of luck to all!

Congrats on a great daughter!

Congratulations to both of them. You have a wonderful daughter!

My daughter received a cadaver kidney. 20 years ago the surgeons cut your flank wide open to get the kidney and recovery took a week in the hospital (morphine for a couple of days) and you were restricted for a couple of months from much lifting. The recipient recovery was much quicker and easier. Now they often do laparoscopic surgery and recovery is quicker and less traumatic. Post a pic of his foley bag with his new urine which will contain stuff dialysis could never filter out.

WHiP, kidney recipient require the right blood type. For example, my daughter is type O and I am type A and she could not accept my kidney. O is the universal kidney donor type (just like O is universal blood donor.) O can donate to A which can donate to B which can donate to AB (so AB can receive from O, A, and B.)

Some organs, like hearts, do not have blood type requirements.

Thank you for the donor and blood type info. Good to know. Apparently, I was clueless.
