Re: Have you successfully dealt with plantar fasciitis? - Speedy - 02-24-2014 Try to figure out why she has developed PF. I got it after starting an exercise program but I blame it on being 40 pounds overweight. I had it in one foot so it was easier to compare progress. I got orthotics to no avail. I noticed that I was running with my big toe slightly raised on the foot with PF so I worked at changing that which helped a lot. Now I push off more-or-less the same from both feet. Three years later, I think what really helped clear it up was making both feet fit properly in my shoes by putting in a spacer in the PF foot shoe because that foot is a bit shorter, unbeknownst to me. I mentioned to a buddy that I was wearing out the inside heel back of that shoe and he said that (PF) foot must be shorter and advised me to insert a heel spacer which I bought at Walgreens. Just for the heck of it I tried a spacer in the other shoe and removed it after 10 painful minutes. Whenever I measured for new shoes I always used the longer (right) foot. Of note, my orthotist said that putting in any additional cushioning in my shoes would actually have a negative effect on the PF. When I got the orthotics she trashed the cushion that came with my shoes. So if you try a cushion from the store, remove the OEM cushion. Re: Have you successfully dealt with plantar fasciitis? - jdc - 02-24-2014 sports medicine doc? it might be muscle related, not just foot? heard this story from a woman I know just recently with it. Everyone had advice. Some worked for awhile, some did nothing. She saw a sports med guy who traced her leg and found something with the muscle. Re: Have you successfully dealt with plantar fasciitis? - beagledave - 02-24-2014 I was reading about the Skecher Shape Ups and plantar fasciitis. They either HELP with p/f or CAUSE it. Hmmm. Re: Have you successfully dealt with plantar fasciitis? - Michael - 02-24-2014 I went through it all several years ago and tried everything that I heard about or the doc suggested. This finally helped me: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002PT52WK/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I still hurt, but it's tolerable. When it gets bad, I use the rocker thing again for a while and it recedes. Re: Have you successfully dealt with plantar fasciitis? - davester - 02-24-2014 As Speedy noted, it is absolutely critical to figure out why you got PF in the first place and correct the problem as quickly as possible. For me, it was running on hard pavement with worn our running shoes. For many people it is a combo of being overweight and not having good walking shoes. Unfortunately, the weight thing is a vicious cycle because with PF, active people start gaining weight because they can no longer get the level of exercise they are used to that helps them to burn calories. The more weight you gain, the worse the PF gets. The way I dealt with weight gain while suffering from PF was to start tracking my calories ingested (using the LoseIt! app) and cutting down to a slight weight loss level of eating and drinking. Plus, once it became bearable I switched from running to bike riding for basic exercise needs. It probably took me about 6 months to get rid of it completely. I definitely went through some periods of despair where I thought I'd never be able to be active again. Don't give up! Re: Have you successfully dealt with plantar fasciitis? - lost in space - 02-24-2014 My experience with PF was much like rRG's. Along with getting shoes with good arch support and prescription orthotics, getting shoes that fit my narrow feet were part of the cure. The orthotics have a hump just to the outside and behind the ball of my feet. At the same time, I got foam work mats for my concrete shop floor, which may have helped too. It was debilitating. Hope you get rid of it. Re: Have you successfully dealt with plantar fasciitis? - fauch - 02-24-2014 Like many back injuries, in my case I just had to "wait"... Re: Have you successfully dealt with plantar fasciitis? - The UnDoug - 02-24-2014 Google for plantar fasciitis taping. It involves using athletic tape around the affected foot. It can be hugely helpful for some people, and is easy, and affordable. I had a bout that lasted 2 years, and ultimately, I think it was stretching regularly combined with wearing my night splint more frequently that made it go away. It was gone several years, and then about a year and a half ago, I noticed it coming back. It is back now, in the same foot, and I also have the beginnings of it in my other foot. :-( I haven't done as much as I could to get rid of it, but it's not as bad as it was the first time. Re: Have you successfully dealt with plantar fasciitis? - sekker - 02-24-2014 My wife is the poster child for custom orthotics ending her plantar faciitis. She tried expensive shoes and off-the-shelf insoles. But going with custom inserts ($400 a set first time she got them), she had noticeable improvement in 48 hours. I, on the other hand, have mild PF in my left foot. Custom orthotics did not work for me - and purchased from the same company. But when they mapped my feet, they claimed the issue was in my right foot (which is still, knock on wood, pain free!). My take-away: depending on the source of problems underlying PF, custom orthotics CAN work great. But it's not going to fix everyone. |
