Have you looked into FreedomPop? If they serve your area and/or device, you could get unlimited voice/text service for less than $7 or limited minutes and texts for free.

what network do they use? I think I looked into them a while back for their internet, but they didn't service my area. Why am I thinking that they use Sprint for mobile phone--or was it someone else?

Their free plan would likely be exactly what I need, if they have reasonably good coverage.

Yeah, that's who my parents use, and one of the contenders at the $30/month level. I would likely go that route if nothing better exists, simply because I know it works well in my area.

Sprint is correct.
Anyone here using this? Seems waaaay too good to be true. And there's little mention of it in the usual places about the internet, especially recent. I searched the ^$$^(&$#@ out of Howard Forums and couldn't find reference to it.

I think they're associated with Sprint, but 4G VOIP, rather than cellular. They have a tool on their site to check availability, and they also offer a free trial month on the unlimited plan. Here's a recent mention.

Republic Wireless is a great deal. Unlimited talk/text and 3G data is $25.00. Throttled after 5GB of data. Just have to buy a Moto X, which comes with a Chromecast as a promo. Could also buy a Moto G for $149.00, which does not come with a Chromecast.

Here is a promo link for $20.00 off your first month.

Freedompop uses Sprint.

Older phones are WiMax, newer phones LTE.

IIRC, you can bring your own.

ALL voice calls go over their VOIP app.

I've used both WiMax & LTE phones on FP, and they're great for text & data (unlimited/500MB free per month).

But voice calls...even over Wi-Fi...let's just say I hope the software gets better.

iPhone on Virgin Mobile (Sprint network) is $30 a month for unlimited text and data and 5 hours of talk a month. (Plan is $35 a month, but there is $5 discount for iPhones when you have automatic payment.)

iPhone isn't cheap, at least $400 on Virgin. However, pretty sure you can bring Sprint branded phones to Virgin (but not the other way around). Can likely grab a sub $200 4S (CDMA EVDO only).

They are doing it wrong. No matter the prefered network, there are ways to get the bill down for an average user. Prepaid and MVNO are good places to start of course. Then again, I'm preaching to the choir here.
