I'm also looking for a guitar, but for me. Waaaay back in Vietnam, a friend taught me a bit, and I enjoyed playing around on it. I learned a few things, so now in me geezerhood, I'm wanting to get another one. Thinking about even taking lessons. But my guitar budget is low.

We went through a similar hunt a couple of years ago for our son, albeit at a slightly lower price point. He wound up with a Takamine G Series EG260C-BL FXC Acoustic Electric for about $400. It's still his main guitar and he loves it!

The January issue of Acoustic Guitar mag has a good section devoted to bargain hunting for acoustics under $600.
In that issue they review the Takamine GD20-NS, street price around $250.00 and to quote them "...just might be a perfect beginners guitar..."

They also review the Yamaha LS16 ARE, a concert sized guitar at $799.00 and give it high marks. As mentioned above Seagulls are an excellent choice. I remember taking a newcomer about 12 yrs ago to Rudys in NYC to buy his first acoustic guitar and I got him a Seagull for about $400. It was well make with a great sound and very playable.

I tried out a couple of Seagulls recently, concur they're very good, especially for the price. I always liked Takamines as well.
