DP doesn't use a router, he screws his coax right into the SCSI port on the back of his Mac.

Nah, no SCSI on the original Mac, he actually soldered a patch directly into the bus. Much more efficient.

No doubt! That's partly because you use a Mac and probably partly because your router is doing the firewalling.
So, should the Firewall be activated in SysPrefs?
Only if you're not using a router or you have disabled the router's firewall or if you're using a portable Mac and take it to places it shouldn't go.

If you are on an insecure or public network it is probably a good idea to have on, but as most people have a router with a built in firewall, the Mac OS one can often be extraneous....
