Mavericks is free from Apple.

Sadly, its not. You can't even buy it.
Yea, it was free when it was available, but as soon as Apple releases a new OS (Yosemite), the previous OS is no longer available for "purchase", but you can still download it if you previously "purchased" it.
This.

Theres no need for a T-bolt cable, just use ethernet.

Cloning would be a good idea IMHO. Mavericks is the way to go.

FWIW, macs havent shipped with "discs" in 5+ years.
ugh..

UGH

i need an adapter- no ethernet on this machine.

I need another adapter- no firewire on this machine

I need another adapter- no cd/dvd player on this machine

Im cloning my old Mavericks disk from my old machine right now in CCC

No issues with taking a clone made from a spinning drive and then cloning to an SSD? Are there?

Not on account of the drive type.

Sorry, senior moment.

The latest Mac OS is free, older OS downloads can be accessed if you paid for them previously. BTW - I learned from Lion to keep the installer as Apple made it hard to come by once 10.8 was out, and I had a ton of machines that could not run 10.8.

And yes - the main downside from that machine is the lack of legacy ports. I use a Belkin TB hub that adds most - ethernet, FW, TB paththrough, etc.

You could also clone the older machine to an external USB3 hard drive, then clone back to the MBPr. That doesn't require any new peripherals - just USB.

Thats as good as any -- its s 2 step process, but it works.

May fault on the ethernet, missed it was a Retina. Just saw "new macbook pro" and went from there.

I made a bootable install of mavericks that I keep on a thumb drive. It's about 6 gb. I could upload a disk image and you could see if it works for you.

Let me know if you have a place to upload to, or I can do it to a free service and then send you the link.
