Recovering from Baller's idiocy at the helm. At least now he's only screwing up the Clippers.

Not going to happen, unless you mean that Windows Phone 8.x is going away in a year because of Windows Phone 10.

I'm quite content with the Windows Phone experience and price-to-performance ratio, and have been for a couple of years. It clearly isn't for everyone, but the FUD surrounding the capabilities of the platform is pretty tiresome...not unlike the FUD surrounding a certain computer company that had a ~3% market share a couple of decades ago.

Well, not to get to hatin' too much, but I think that Microsoft is going to largely get out of the phone hardware business. Which leaves the Windows Mobile platform to 3rd party OEMs. Even if they give the OS away, they're competing against another certain free mobile OS that has zillions more apps (as well as Office, now).

Your phone won't stop working...it's just not going to attract many (if any) new developers or apps.

Ballmer did them no favors. His persona just seemed to (and continues to) shroud that brand in uncool. At least Gates was a lovable nerd, a humble and amiable enough fellow from interviews I've seen. Ballmer...ummm, no...just the opposite and still at it even after he's left the company. He's the Dick Cheney/Donald Rumsfeld of the business world.

I don't think that phone or anything else "new" they make ever has a chance with the memory of Ballmer around. They have Office which is a mainstay and always will be. The rest...not trying to be cruel or insensitive, but I wish them luck. I have a buddy who is a super-good guy who works in marketing in their phone division. I imagine he'll lose his job. Sad.

The Xbox has been a decent success for Microsoft and if not for Ballmer saving their butts over broken systems, huge expenditure ($1+ billion), the Xbox would have been over by 2010.

I like the Windows Phone GUI better than iOS and Android. Of course, it is not perfect (no multiple alarms in their calendar, for example), but I find it much simpler to look at for long periods of time than the other devices. But, I returned the phone, as I just decided that my gmail integration was more important to me than the nicer GUI.

Daniel Rubino's analysis (and Nadella himself) says as much, considering that Microsoft/Nokia controls 97% of the Windows Phone hardware market.

Depending on how unified Windows 10 ends up being across all devices, it may not need to. (I admit I am not particularly optimistic about this.)

I'm optimistic because Microsoft has been working on this unified development strategy for a while, but I also agree that Microsoft getting out of the phone business means the end of Windows Phone/Mobile.

The biggest problem they seem to have is that they see something that Apple has success with, and then try to do the same - and it is never as good.

Seems like they need to start innovating on their own instead of trying to ride someone else's coattails!

Taking advantage of the confluence of the Microsoft phone news and the new announced Wendiceratops pinhornensis

They turned Nokia into a dinosaur! A weirdly managed Microsoft dinosaur.
