I think it depends on the automaker. Ford is known for pretty crappy CVT's. Lexus/Toyota seem to put out very nice and reliable ones. I don't know about the others. I like my 6 speed manual in my VW, but I know lots of people who don't like it, including my wife. If you don't spend a lot of time stuck in traffic, I think the manual is a great transmission and will last. Also, turns out lots of car thieves these day can't even drive a stick. Hah!
