My suggestion would be to *definitely* pay the $100 to have it done!

I have a projector, and have done the "project it and film it" routine, and while it *does* work, it does not produce great results. One issue is that old film like that has an "FPS" (frames per second) rate of, I believe, 24 FPS, video camera film at 30 FPS. If those aren't the exact numbers, there is definitely a difference. This difference causes "flickering" in the digitized copy. There are projectors with adjustable frame rates, but they are typically expensive, since everyone knows they're in demand.

If they are doing it properly, they do a 3:2 pulldown, and convert the film's 24fps to "30" fps for the video. I have no reason to believe that a business like Costco doesn't farm out to someone who knows what they are doing.

I noticed that Walmart, Costco, and CVS apparently use the same company called YES VIDEO.
