There's a old doctor in West Virginia that lives just over the border from me.
I asked him to briefly explain MRIs to me, and he obliged.
Pointing both his index fingers to his face just under his non-magnetic metal framed eyeglasses, he said "MRIs".

Another possible explanation: maybe the metal fragments got in there after the MRI

The lateral view of the hand would show if it's surface or within the hand. Have you seen the x-ray? How deep was the fragment?
