...Of course, these Siberian Tigers actually have an excuse for their gluttony. Winters in Heilongjiang are notoriously brutal and some extra fat helps to keep away the cold. By the time summer arrives they should be back to their normal shape.

Yes, I read. I also mistakenly assumed that like all decent zoos and wildlife parks that there are regular scheduled feedings. No need to gorge then starve.

The appetite of a cat varies, controlled in large part by the amount of daylight they're getting. It may be that if they don't provide the boost in nutrition, the cats will get more aggressive. (My cats are always hungrier and more aggressive about food during the winter, too.)... But also, that zoo is in Harbin where winter temps usually go well below zero F so the cats probably need the fat.
