I think I had read somewhere that this was pitched to Paramount as a Trek series but that it was rejected...and not long after, DS9 (my fave Trek) came along. Go figure. Anyone read similar take on it?

Own them both.
Babylon 5 had Hubble shots for backdrops and Farscape had Moya.

I don't know why, but I have only seen bits and pieces of B5 and Farscape. :dunno:
Maybe it's something I will watch, but on the other hand, there is tons of TV that I "want to see" but there just aren't enough hours in the day.

That is basically what J Michael Straczynski wrote years ago in posts on the Babylon 5 Usenet group. Essentially he pitched the idea to Paramount, but not necessarily as a Trek series. They said they would pass on it, but once it came out that he had found a studio to do the series at, shortly afterwards Paramount announced DS9. Paramount execs had been shown the show bible as part of the pitch, there are a number of elements they appeared to have borrowed for DS9.

Yes, indeed! And DS9 was only possible because Roddenberry had just passed away - he was adamantly against a Star Trek series based on a space station.

The Wikipedia article on B5 has a reasonable writeup of the B5/DS9 controversy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylon_5#Star_Trek:_Deep_Space_Nine_controversy. I imagine that besides the archive used for the citations in the piece, if the Usenet archives that Google has are still available, further quotes could be found.
