As Steven Waldman notes in the Atlantic, “dual-allegiance charges go much further than offering a polite disagreement on policy. They imply not only that a group is un-American, but that its adherents have no agency. They cannot be patriotic, because they are thoroughly under the influence of a foreign power or code.” It’s a way of suggesting not just that one is an “other” but also that one is brainwashed, hypnotized, or lacking in moral agency as a result of nefarious foreign forces. It’s a suggestion that you are a pawn, and lucky to have a protector. This is a slur and a scandal in which the president of the United States is invoking an age-old, blood-soaked, anti-Jewish trope. And, ever the narcissist, Trump is also warning all American Jews that he will not protect them if they are disloyal to him.

It was the word “disloyal” which got my attention. Because he always demands full loyalty and does more than threaten when he doesn’t get it. The only saving grace here is that he’s also a major blowhard, incapable and incompetent of actual leadership to act upon his impulses.

....Except that the Senior Advisor to the President and the one who makes policy for him is a Nazi.

And, it’s less about disparaging voters (a convenient bonus for him) than it is to more broadly “call out” Democratic politicians in an effort to portray any criticism of Israel/Israeli leadership they may have into a charge of anti-Semitism. That’s how Trump fell into the trap of saying it would be better for Democrats to be loyal to a foreign country than to the constituents who elected them.

“... Trump’s goal: conflating Omar’s comments with Tlaib’s and Ocasio-Cortez’s criticism of Israel’s policies. Conflating that with anti-Semitism. Then conflating those representatives with the Democratic Party broadly. We go quickly from the views of two freshman members of Congress to a sweeping indictment of the party that is presented as necessarily disqualifying for anyone Jewish.“

The irony of the ridiculousness is all over the place. In that opinion piece link, Philip Bump shows how back in 2015 Trump spoke to the RJC, telling them they won’t support him because he doesn’t want their money and that they should find someone else to control ... a very similar thing Omar apologized for. But for Trump, the RJC thanked him then and support him still.

I saw that the “Republican Jewish Coalition” totally agrees with Trump, while helpfully reading Trump’s mind,

...arguing that the president was speaking about people being disloyal to themselves rather than to Israel.

Ooo-kay then.

The RJC is right up there with Log Cabin Republicans. They each have their narrow view of what conservatism means in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. Every once in a while one of them quasi-defects after becoming “shocked” about something.

Yes this is perfectly normal. Trump is the King of Israel now, the second coming of God in fact! Everything's fine. Today's early presidential tweet storm:

“Thank you to Wayne Allyn Root for the very nice words. “President Trump is the greatest President for Jews and for Israel in the history of the world, not just America, he is the best President for Israel in the history of the world...and the Jewish people in Israel love him....

...like he’s the King of Israel. They love him like he is the second coming of God...But American Jews don’t know him or like him. They don’t even know what they’re doing or saying anymore. It makes no sense! But that’s OK, if he keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s good for.....

.....all Jews, Blacks, Gays, everyone. And importantly, he’s good for everyone in America who wants a job.” Wow!

Root is a conservative radio host, apparently a fan.

good comment
"Don't these traitorous Jews know that I am the King of Israel??"

"This is to set up "disloyal" Jews as Trump's next scapegoat. Same old playbook."

Even Faux news is calling this just like the Germans did for Jews a few years ago...
