[quote C(-)ris]Hybrids aren't really as eco friendly as people want to believe they are. I
You taking lessons from IBM of yore? Pure FUD.

Are you joking, spearmint? Comparing an SUV to a subcompact? Someone who needs the carrying capacity of an SUV or van is not going to buy a subcompact vehicle.

"changing her habits is not an option and should not be a requirement for getting better gas milage." ???!! I assume that's her attitude?

Yikes.

She drives fast and has for forty years. Why should she have to change for a hybrid? The savings were not supposed to be dependent on changing your driving habits.

The Ford Escape Hybrid is the only one I hear that's getting close to what it's rated at. My
Scion xA is rated at 32 and 39, I'm getting 37-38 on the highway and a lot more fun than a
Corolla. Fold down the back seat and it's like a little wagon. My wife wants to replace her
Explorer with a Prius.

Since when? They've always been dependent on driving habits. If that's the case she's not
going to get anywhere near the rated mileage of any vehicle. Does she have the same
attitude towards maintenance? Jeez.

so I figure the highway mileage would have been higher if I'd been able to set it on cruise, too.

...might have been higher would be more accurate.

Cruise controls do not guarantee that you'll get better mileage. IF the road is fairly flat and IF the traffic is fairly light, that MIGHT be true.

What mileage was she getting with the car she had before and is her mileage better now than it was?

Like I said before, YMMV. If you drive with a lead foot, your mileage will be nowhere the EPA rating for a car no matter what you drive.

If this conversation seems eerily familiar, it's because we discussed Mint's sister's Highlander's mileage back in July '05 at the other place.

I drive with a lead foot and get 21-22 it's rated at 24. Not that bad. I mean, bat out of hell, pedal on the floor board, triple digits lead foot.
