[quote vision63]What's the difference between a gift card and cash? Gift cards are troublesome. What makes a gift card more thoughtful?
Someone told me that it forces a person to get a real "gift" for themselves instead of just spending it on the light bill. Makes sense.

[quote Zoidberg]I keep a gift list running all year @ Amazon. Family & friends know it is there if they're really looking for something.
My college-aged kid does as well; it's very convenient, but not mistake-proof. This year, a strange book appeared on her Amazon list along with a variety of expected books, but I went ahead and got it for her for Christmas. When she opened it, it was clear that a mistake had been made--she finally told us that she put it on her list to remember to get it for her boyfriend! I assume it will make it to him at some point. It's lucky that we like him!

[quote Racer X][quote mattkime]What tripod do you currently have? I bought a gitzo cf before trekking hundreds of miles with my tripod on my back but for anything less than that a bogen at 1/3 the price is a surprisingly good competitor.
the Bogen 3021 Pro is a pretty darn good tripod. i have 2 at work. The Pro is the current updated version of the old 3021. The current 3021 is mediocre IMHO.
Hey RacerX, how heavy is the Bogen? My biggest issue is weight. I'm at the point in life where I have to consider how well I can carry the weight of the camera and tripod as I walk around all day.

I may not get a tripod for quite a while, that is until I can get the one I really want (and I don't yet know what that is).

I hate knowing that there is something available that would be just right for me and I can't really say what it is. As I asked above, how heavy is the Bogen and how high does it extend?

gift cards are impersonal, whether you think so or not.

not saying the intention is impersonal... but it's the same as giving cash.
you are not choosing a gift you think will match what a person wants.

One of my big frustrations is that while I have a real instinct for coming up with the "right" gift for almost everyone I know, but it's rare that anyone gets it right for me.

The way it works for me is if I spot something that I "know" will work for someone, I just buy it even though it's not anywhere near an occasion. This way I always have an appropriate special gift when the time comes around.

Same thing works with greeting cards.

I really enjoy the process.

Mattkime, the price is quite reasonable. It doesn't state what material the tripod is made of, although it mentions aluminum for the column. If it's all aluminum then that's why I want CF.

Total weight for this tripod with a head and my camera+lens would be over 15 lbs. That would be pushing it for me.

The design of the Bogen seems very good to me. Do you know of anything comparable in CF that with a head would cost $300 to $500?

I'd rather save up for a lighter weight setup than buy just for price.

If it wasn't for the weight factor, this Bogen would be a really good choice and I appreciate the suggestion.

Now if you can suggest an equivalent in CF, at least I'll know what I'm looking for.

Thank you Matt.
