So the drive has to be removed (or presumably disconnected inside the case) in order to flash the firmware in a FW enclosure?

you can flash the firmware without removing the drive - but it is recommended, catch all, that data on a drive be backed up prior to doing so.

I have tried the enclosure on two Macs, with three different cables, using both ports on the enclosure and I have the same issue every time.
Maybe I'll try pulling the drive out of the enclosure and see if daisy chaining it then works.
