Sorry for sounding so politically calculating about this but if Leahy were to die, if I understand it correctly, the governor - who is a Republican - would call for a special election that has to take place within six months of the vacancy and can name a temporary replacement person in the interim. If so, that would probably be really bad for Democrats wouldn't it? As in could they lose their Senate majority - at least temporarily?

That is correct, but my understanding is out of respect, it is the custom to name someone from that same party that held the seat. But it seems like customs, at least as they pertain to political courtesy, are in short supply.

Yeah. Any of that shit is out the window.

Gov. Phil Scott is not what we would recognize as a Republican outside of Vermont. He's both very centrist and very popular in the state. I think that if anyone were to follow a customary precedent, it would be Scott.

Can you imagine the pressure, though, that he would be under from Republicans. I mean pressure from Republican leaders calling him constantly pushing him to name a Republican as the interim senator and "pressure" from the Trump-a-Q whackos, including terrible threats to his family. I don't know anything about him, but I would hope that he has the integrity and the fortitude to stand up to that coercion. Hopefully we'll never need to find out.

"The Capitol Physician suggested that Senator Leahy go to George Washington University Hospital this evening for observation, out of an abundance of caution," Leahy spokesman David Carle said late Tuesday. " After getting test results back, and after a thorough examination, Senator Leahy now is home. He looks forward to getting back to work. Patrick and Marcelle deeply appreciate the well wishes they have received tonight."

Leahy was back presiding over the Senate Wednesday.

Part of being a governor in today's America, I'm afraid.

I hope that he cares more about the people who elected him than he does about Republican national figures. He won reelection last November by a 41% margin over his Lt. Governor.

How the GOP base treats its governor and SoS in GA will be telling to all such state-specific GOP politicians with a backbone.

Re: Leahy is hospitalized - rjmacs - 01-27-2021

I hasten to point out that Georgia is not Vermont. The "GOP base" is a different animal there, and Phil Scott has not risen to prominence by catering to the former president's base.

Good news indeed

Yes, it will be interesting and probably painful to watch. I would love it of we could get a democratic governor in the next cycle here.
If the republican party splinters and does not get behind the nominee, and the democrats run someone that is more appealing to a broad base, and get out the vote, it might, just might be possible. A lot of things need to fall into place, and I can't even think about another race right now though.
