My only contribution to the discussion would be "not GE" and probably Whirlpool is a good bet; thinking back on all of the appliances I've had (for my current house and two rentals) for the past 30 years - it was the GE-branded ones that tended to break (a dishwasher, a range, and two over-the-range microwaves); the Whirlpools just keep going-and-going, though.

If you are going to need to run gas lines and put in exhaust venting, it may be just as economical to go with an induction range.

We had gas at our old house (after years of electric). New house has induction. The wife HATES induction cooking. She wants gas again, mainly for cooking and clothes drying. Unfortunately, there's no main line near us, and the gas company quoted us $16K just to run the line.

Our Frigidaire Professional is still going after about 12 years, knock on wood, and gets used pretty much everyday but don't want to brag on it too much. They still make a Professional line but it's a good bit different. Their current Gallery line is a bit closer to it. My wife loves this one.

Why?

I understand why pros would prefer gas since there's a better visual indication of the amount of heat but restaurants are starting to adopt it since install is easier, cheaper, and more flexible than gas.

fyi, GE Appliances is owned by Haier (China) which also owns Fisher & Paykel.

I already have a vented exhaust and access to the floor in the kitchen is readily available. I can see the electrical wiring for the existing range from the basement. Should be relatively easy to add the gas line and wall box. I might even stub out the box myself first just to make sure, but I won't do gas lines. I'm sure I could, it is just pipe and fittings but from a safety and liability standpoint that it one of the things that just isn;'t worth doing myself. Didn't realize that wasn't standard in a kitchen? What do you do about the moisture from boiling a pot of water or just the smoke from searing some meat if you don't have a vent?

I watched some of the videos from Yale, and GE seems to be on the top of their list for relatively inexpensive models. I'd love a Wolf, but my budget is sub $1000. We will probably be moving in 1-5 years, so it isn't worth the investment in a high end range.

Most people just don't think about it / don't really cook / don't know there's a solution.

.

Keep in mind, Yale is a high-volume GE dealer (lots of builder sales) and
GE is a high margin line for them.

I would agree on the GE appliances, except for the Monogram line. Those are an upgrade and they basically use other makers for the components. We got a gas cooktop in this line that was made by DCS, and it very nice. The oven in this line was made by Dacor, also very nice. Having said all that, I think that these days it is often you get what you can find. Make sure whatever you buy is something that actually exists, not something you order and someday it arrives. Because it may never actually arrive.

I got an estimate for around $600 for time and materials for getting the plumbing for gas and electrical put in. Not too bad, I think that I can cut a few hours of his time doing the box install in the wall and coring the hole for the line to the basement if I go that route. I'll also add the electrical outlet while I am at it.

Now it is time to see what is in stock and go from there. My wife may disagree, but since it is only the oven that doesn't work I figure I have until Thanksgiving to figure this out.
